One of the UK’s best-preserved late Neolithic sites, Merry Maidens consists of 19 granite stones that form a perfect circle nearly 23 metres in diameter. While its name is charming, this place has a far darker leaning, with legends recounting tales of local girls who danced here on the Sabbath being turned to stone.
TINTAGEL
From the first sight of Tintagel Castle, perched high above the coastline as if rising from the cliff’s very edge, it’s immediately apparent why this is the reputed place of King Arthur’s conception. For centuries this striking landscape has inspired many writers, drawn to the location for its scenery as much as Tristan and Iseult’s famous love story.
ST AGNES MINE
Tucked into a stunning and unspoilt spot on the Cornish coast, St Agnes was once a busy mining district. Today, this is both a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty and a World Heritage site. And it’s here that you’ll find Wheal Coates, Cornwall’s most iconic tin mine, set beside its coastal paths and said to be haunted by ghosts of the miners who sadly died there.
ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT
This rocky island is crowned by a medieval church and castle characterised by its stunning Gothic facade. Accessible by a causeway only when the tide is low, this location creates a dramatic spectacle when viewing St Michael’s from land or sea.
